The human genetic evolution rate controversy

After taking cultural evolution into account, human genetic evolution (i.e. the evolution of human DNA) has accelerated in recent times - as a result of a number of factors:

  • The population has exploded, resulting in vastly more opportunities for positive mutations to happen;
  • Genes are poorly matched for the environment - resulting in directional selection pressures;
  • Shielding protects mutations from selection - allowing them to persist in the population;
So: it is rather strange to see the opposite case being made. Here's Steven Jones, claiming that the evolution of human DNA is effectively over.

Steve claims that selection by death between the ages of 1 month and 21 years has much reduced - which is true in many areas of the world. He claims that selection by differential reproductive success has reduced somewhat - which also seems to be true, to some extent.

However, he then says that the effects of genetic drift are reduced - as a result of larger population sizes and less isolation. This is true - but reasoning from there to reduced levels of evolutionary change gets things rather backwards. Small population sizes results in stochastic sampling effects - which eliminate genetic variation. Larger population sizes result in less of this elimination of variation, resulting in more of the variation introduced by mutations persisting. So, while it is true that larger population sizes prevent a trype of evolution due to sampling errors, larger populations also allow mutations to persist better than small populations do.

These days, we don't have to rely on hand-waving arguments to settle this point. We have data on evolutionary rates from molecular evidence which allow us to see both the current rate of change and the amount of change since humans diverged from our common ancestors with chimpanzees.

This has been done. The conclusions have been reported in the article Culture Speeds Up Human Evolution. To quote from it:

the rate of human evolution over the past few thousand years is far greater than it has been over the past few million years.
The article also says:

Comparing the amount of genetic differentiation between humans and our closest relatives, chimpanzees, suggests that the pace of change has accelerated to 10 to 100 times the average long-term rate

This controversy is surely now dead. We can now see that culture speeds up human evolution.

Memetics vs multi-level selection

I don't really object to multi-level selection theory - but it does seem to be frequently over used.

For example, here's David Sloan Wilson explaining the need for group selection in explaining altruistic acts:

Early in the video, Wilson claims that group selection is the only possible explanation for altruistic acts. That's just wrong.

Checking with my list of viable hypotheses which can help to explain altruistic acts, it looks as though Wilson may be underestimating the influence of manipulation and overgeneralisation.

In manipulation, parasites and memetic symbionts manipulate their hosts for their own ends. Since symbiont reproduction requires contact between hosts, making the hosts be nice to other hosts helps the symbionts to reproduce.

In overgeneralisation, resource-limited cognition results in organisms being nice to one another - because that is what usually pays.

As with other group selection theorists, Wilson may also be over-estimating the actual incidence of altruistic acts. For example, many forms of altruism act as a form of virtue signalling - and show how nice you are.

Who first realised that ideas have sex?

These days, "ideas having sex" has been popularised, but it wasn't always so. I've been looking at which cultural evolution pioneers realised that ideas have sex. Some of the earliest references I found were:
  • 1970 - Jacques Monod, in the book Chance and Necessity wrote: "For a biologist it is tempting to draw a parallel between the evolution of ideas and that of the biosphere. For while the abstract kingdom stands at a yet greater distance above the biosphere than the latter does above the nonliving universe, ideas have retained some of the properties of organisms. Like them, they tend to perpetuate their structure and to breed; they too can fuse, recombine, segregate their content; indeed they too can evolve, and in this evolution selection must surely play an important role."
  • 1987 - K. Eric Drexler - Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology "Like genes, ideas split, combine, and take multiple forms (genes can be transcribed from DNA to RNA and back again; ideas can be translated from language to language)"- page 30.
  • 1989 - Lynch et al A model of cultural evolution of chaffinch song derived with the meme concept covered the concept.
In the 1990s, the idea became more common - appearing explicitly in Lynch's Thought Contagion (1996), for example. However, I didn't find too many other mentions of sexual recombination of ideas in the 1970s and 1980s. The idea doesn't seem to be present in Dawkins 1976, 1982 or 1986. Indeed in 2005 (page 192), Dawkins wrote:
One respect in which [memes] are not like genes is that there is nothing obviously corresponding to chromosomes or loci or alleles or sexual recombination.
...suggesting that he hadn't grasped the concept of sexual recombination among ideas then.

The idea isn't in Cavalli-Sforza & Feldman (1981), it isn't in Lumsden & Wilson (1981) and it isn't in Boyd & Richerson (1985). The latter do mention "cultural mating" - but they use the term to refer to individuals acquiring ideas from multiple parents - and not "ideas having sex". I didn't see it in Hull (1988), Brodie (1995) or Boyd & Richerson (2005) either.

Darwin (1871) gave us:

Languages, like organic beings, can be classed in groups under groups; and they can be classed either naturally according to descent, or artificially by other characters. Dominant languages and dialects spread widely, and lead to the gradual extinction of other tongues. A language, like a species, when once extinct, never, as Sir C. Lyell remarks, reappears. The same language never has two birth-places. Distinct languages may be crossed or blended together.
...though that isn't quite the same. Words having sex would have captured the idea.

Recombination is a fairly fundamental evolutionary idea - but it apparently took a while to sink in - in the domain of cultural evolution.
